FOCUS OF THE WEEK

This week we focus on Reggae from Peru. Although Andean folklore comes to mind first when thinking about Peruvian music, this highly musical country also has a number of other exciting local music styles, such as Criolla music from the coast or Amazon inspired tropical music, as well as excellent variations of global musical genres from Opera to Indie Rock, Heavy Metal, Hip Hop and some of the best World Reggae out there, often with influences from the native rhythms. The original fusion country, with the various Amerindian communities from the Andes and the Amazon mixing throughout the centuries with Spanish colonizers, African slaves and Chinese, Japanese and European migrants, each retaining their cultural identity as well as contributing to the melting pot that is reflected in modern Peruvian society, culture, cuisine, art and of course music, giving another dimension of interest for visitors otherwise bowled over by the diversity of the country, from arid deserts on the surfer friendly coast, to the high peaks of the Andes and to the steamy bio-diversity of the Amazon jungles. Often heading straight to the wonders of Machu Picchu or the Lake Titicaca, visitors often overlook the vibrant capital of Lima, the 'City of Kings'. The second largest capital city in a desert (after Cairo), Lima overlooks the Pacific Ocean from its clifftops, under which is a long stretch of sand and pebble beaches popular with the surfing crowd and giving Lima its unique vibe. With some of the best food in the world, fascinating museums, a rich cultural scene and a vibrant night life with plenty of concerts by local and foreign artists, no visit to Peru would be complete if not dedicating a few days to experience and feel the capital, home to most of Peru's excellent Reggae bands, with a selection of the best ones featured below with videos mostly portraying the various sides of this most endearing capital of the fabulous tourist destination that is Peru.
